My wife and I stayed for 4 nights at the Bequia Plantation Hotel in mid July. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The hotel had been closed for several years and re-opened for dining at the end of last year and by April was accepting overnight guests. The setting is exquisite with the extensive hotel grounds looking onto a horseshoe shaped bay and a delightful light sand beach between the water and the edge of the hotel grounds.
We especially liked the cottage that had been set aside for us - beautifully renovated, with much use of a crisp white in the interior contrasted with nautical blues and aquamarines. The overall effect was a gorgeous aesthetic and the cottage was nicely furnished and equipped. It reminded me of the Caribbean from a different era, the time of the James Bond film "Dr No" with an understated sophistication and restful elegance.
Work is taking place to thoroughly modernize cottages at the far end of the property and once completed, the Plantation Hotel will be arguably the best resort on Bequia.
Previous contributors have written about the open air pizza oven and restaurant which I very much admired as a marketing tool. Not only do the hotel guests gather round but also a wide selection of people living in Bequia, whether expatriates or local. This produces a very convivial atmosphere and a great place to learn where to see and visit on the island. In addition, several crew members from the yachts and boats that dock in the bay, tend to join the informal gathering with some very interesting discussions taking place.
A service industry is only as good as the service provided. At the Bequia Plantation Hotel we found the staff to be excellent. We had arrived early by about 4 hours and expected to leave our luggage in temporary storage. Elena in reception not only gave us immediate access to our cottage but provided a delicious fruit punch as well. At the bar, Ernie, Jimmy and "K" were all excellent hosts and a mine of local information. Carrie was always energetic to make sure that our general needs were taken care of and our housekeeping was looked after particularly well by Morita. Ms. Carian who multitasked in a very commendable fashion, was also of great help to us. We cannot forget Jerry the chef who produces some excellent food - it is not all about pizza. There were other staff whose names we did not get to know.
The hotel may not appeal to all. It does not provide the party seeking, rumbustious Sandals type experience - but for discerning travelers, it will enable an insight into Caribbean style on an island that is not greatly known beyond the Grenadines.
